During the same period, the ex- pected increase in food and feed production remains at 60 percent. According to these figures, the number of malnour- ished people will increase by almost 1 billion in 2050. Be- sides, increasing urbanization may lead to the reduction of agricultural areas currently allocated for food production. All of these factors are alarming that animal production needs to be increased more efficiently to meet the protein deficit. While traditional protein feed sources such as soybeans, fishmeal, and meat flour are increasing, the demand for al- ternative protein sources is growing each year. At this point, the issue of insect protein which has been widely talked about in recent years comes to the agenda throughout the world. Insects are a promising matter because they have the potential to be an alternative to traditional protein sourc- es of animal and plant origin. This protein source, which is traditionally welcome in the plates in the Far East, is also increasingly used as animal feed for the rest of the world. Insects; it is a profitable alternative for the players who want to invest in this area due to its high conversion rate of waste to biomass, short life cycles, and high protein content. So much so that companies operating in this field declare that insect farming is thousands of times more effi- cient in protein production than, say, soybean production. We have allocated the special cover of this issue to insects which have a significant potential for the sector although not mainstream yet. Pleasant reading… BÖCEKLERİN YEM OLARAK KULLANILMASINA HAZIR MIYIZ? Uzmanlar her koldan gıda talebinin önümüzdeki 30 yılda iki katına çıkacağını yazıyor. Aynı zaman zarfında gıda ve yem üretiminde beklenen artış ise yüzde 60’larda kalıyor. Bu ra- kamlara göre 2050 yılında yetersiz beslenen insan sayısı nere- deyse 1 milyarlık bir artış gösterecek. Ayrıca artan şehirleşme hâlihazırda gıda üretimi için ayrılan tarım alanlarının azalmasını da beraberinde getirebilir. Bütün bu faktörler protein açığını kapatmak için hayvansal üretimin çok daha verimli bir şekilde artırılması gerektiği yönünde alarm veriyor. Soya fasulyesi, balık unu ve et unu gibi geleneksel protein yem kaynaklarının fiyatları artarken alternatif protein kaynak- larına olan talep de her geçen yıl büyüyor. Bu noktada hem dünyada hem de ülkemizde son yıllarda kendinden bahsettiren böcek proteini konusu gündeme geliyor. Böcekler, hayvan ve bitki kaynaklı geleneksel protein kaynaklarına alternatif olma potansiyeli taşımalarından dolayı gelecek vaat eden bir baş- lık. Uzakdoğu’da geleneksel olarak sofralarda da kendine yer bulan bu protein kaynağı, dünyanın geri kalanı için de giderek daha yaygın bir şekilde hayvan yemi olarak kullanılmaya aday. Böcekler; atıkların biyokütleye dönüşüm oranlarının yük- sek olması, yaşam döngülerinin kısa olması ve yüksek prote- in içeriği nedeniyle bu alanda yatırım yapmak isteyen oyun- cular için cazip bir alternatif olarak kendini gösteriyor. Öyle ki, bu alanda faaliyet gösteren firmalar böcek yetiştiriciliğinin -örneğin soya üretimine kıyasla- protein üretimi açısından binlerce kat daha verimli olduğunu açıklıyor.
