At this point, insects, one of the most impor- tant candidates for meeting the protein deficit, bring along various question marks. Our special file is intended to give companies advocating the use of insects as animal feed the opportunity to express themselves. Sık sık bahsedildiği gibi, nüfus artışı ve hayvansal ürünlere olan talebin artışı günümüzün üretim anlayışı ve hacimleriyle karşılanabilecek gibi görünmüyor. Tam da bu noktada konuya dâhil olan ve protein açığını kapatma konusundaki en önemli adaylardan biri olan böcekler çeşitli soru işaretlerini de beraberinde geti- riyor. Özel dosyamız, böceklerin hayvan yemi olarak kullanımını savunan firmala- rın kendilerini anlatabilmelerine fırsat tanıma amacını taşıyor. Dünya nüfusunun 2050’de 10 milyar ci- varına ulaşması beklenirken, gıda üretimi- nin de %70 oranında artması bekleniyor. Bu rakamlar aynı süre zarfında hayvansal ürünlere talebin iki katına çıkmasını gerek- tiriyor. Öngörülen zorluklar ışığında, bö- cekler hem bu artan nüfusu ve hayvanların gıda ihtiyacını karşılamak için sürdürülebilir ve yüksek kaliteli protein talebine bir çö- züm sağlayabilir. Böceklerin sürdürülebilir ve yüksek kaliteli protein talebi bakımından hem insanları doyurabileceği hem de hay- vanları besleyebileceği ifade ediliyor. AB Politikaları ve Mevzuatı bu yeni ve inovatif sektöre büyük destek verebilir: Bu- gün böcekler, AB ülkelerinde balık yemi ve evcil hayvan maması olarak kullanılabiliyor. Bundan sonraki adım, kümes hayvanı yemi ve ardından da diğer besi hayvanları için kullanılmasına izin vermek olacak. Daha sonra da yem olarak kullanılabilen böcek- lerin çeşitlerinin artırılması bekleniyor. With the world population expect- ed to reach around 10 billion by 2050, food production is expected to increase by 70%. These figures necessitated the demand for animal products to double in the same period. In the view of those foreseen challenges, insects may provide a solution to the demand for sustainable and high-quality protein to feed both this growing population and livestock. It is stated that insects can feed both humans and animals in terms of sustainable and high quality protein demand. EU Policies and Legislations can further boost the development of this young and innovative sector: Today, insects can be used in fish feed and pet food within the European Union. The next step will be to authorize their use for poultry feed and other livestock before widening the range of allowed insects’ substrates.
