4 FEED PLANET / MAY-JUNE 2020 • MAYIS-HAZİRAN 2020 Dear readers, In addition to the loss of lives and the effects on human health, the global corona crisis we have made us experi- ence a global economic shock, particularly in the developed world. According to official statistics, around 5 million peo- ple worldwide have been infected with this virus. It has been recorded that over 320 thousand lives have been defeated by this relentless virus. From an economic perspective, the magnitude of the crisis has not yet been fully calculated. Economists seem to agree that this would be better under- stood with the follow-on costs. On the other hand, although some vaccine trials on sub- jects are announced to be successful, we are still far from a definite and widespread solution to the virus. In this case, as individuals, we do not have much choice except to ob- serve the measures that governments have brought within the scope of the 'flattening the curve' moves to save time to prevent a possible health sector collapse until the vaccine is found and hope that the vaccine will become widespread as soon as possible. What individuals can do is limited to their own health. However, the private sector, especially the companies in the food chain, needs to do something beyond just hop- ing and maintaining social distance. Even if an effective and widespread vaccine is developed for the coronavirus, food safety must be guaranteed against similar outbreaks. Food safety and food security were on the global agenda before the Coronavirus. However, now we for sure know that we are on tenterhooks. The virus once again taught us that the rapidness and rationality of the decision-making mechanism is vital not only for profitability, but also for food security. Değerli okuyucularımız, İçinden geçtiğimiz küresel korona krizi, can kayıplarının ve insan sağlığı üzerindeki etkilerinin yanı sıra gelişmiş ülkeler başta olmak üzere dünya genelinde de iktisadi bir şok ya- şatmış durumda. Resmi istatistiklere göre, dünya genelinde bu virüse yakalandığı tespit edilen 5 milyon civarında kişi var. 320 binin üzerinde canın da bu amansız virüse yenik düştü- ğü kayıtlara geçmiş durumda. Ekonomik açıdan bakıldığın- da ise, krizin büyüklüğü henüz tam olarak hesaplanabilmiş değil. İktisat uzmanları bunun artçı dalgaların ardından daha iyi anlaşılacağı görüşünde hemfikir görünüyor. Diğer taraftan, her ne kadar kobaylar üzerinde yapılan bazı başarılı aşı denemelerinden bahsedilse de virüse karşı henüz kesin ve seri üretime geçilmiş bir çözümden uzağız. Bu durumda, bireyler olarak devlet yönetimlerinin aşı bulu- nana kadar sağlık sektörünün tıkanmasının önüne geçmek için zaman kazanmak amaçlı ‘eğriyi düzleştirme’ hamleleri kapsamında getirdikleri önlemlere harfiyen dikkat etmek ve aşının bir an evvel yaygınlaşmasını umut etme dışında fazla seçeneğimiz yok. Bireylerin yapabilecekleri kendi sağlıklarıyla sınırlı. Ancak gıda zincirinde yer alan firmalar başta olmak üzere özel sek- törün eli kolu bağlı umut etmek ve sosyal mesafeyi korumak dışında da bir şeyler yapması gerekiyor. Koronavirüs için et- kili ve yaygın bir aşı geliştirilse dahi benzer salgınlara karşı gıda güvenliğinin sağlanması gerekiyor. Gıda güvenliği, Koronavirüsten önce de tüm dünyanın gündemindeydi. Ancak artık diken üstünde olduğumuzu daha iyi biliyoruz. Virüs bize karar alma mekanizmasının hızlı ve akılcı olmasının sadece kârlılık değil, gıda güvenliği açısında da hayati olduğunu bir kere daha öğretti.
