As it is known, animal welfare stands out as a relatively new concept and is different from animal health. It is a comprehensive concept that goes beyond just dealingwith the health of farmani- mals from an industrial point of view and covers everything that affects the quality of life of animals. We announced that Feed Planet, which had previously decid- ed to cover feed additives and received positive reactions from the industry, will also focus on animal health and welfare issues in 2022. In this framework, we got in contact with many national and international organizations and institutes. Among themwas the Eu- ropean Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which works closely with the European Union. In this issue, we had the opportunity to interview Mr. Yves van der Stede, team leader of animal welfare at the Euro- pean body. Considering our cover topic has been determined as poultry welfare, we had the opportunity to have a very informative conversation by focusing on this species. Yves van der Stede, who drew attention to the fact that animal welfare should be handled with a scientific approach according to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), stated that developments in animal welfare have a direct positive impact on animal health, and this can be achieved without compromising production rates. Consumers, who are known to be more conscious and de- manding about healthy food compared to a generation or two ago, seem to be sensitive also about animal health and welfare. Van der Stede noted that consumers now attach importance to the fact that the food that enters their homes is produced in ac- cordance with animal welfare criteria, and emphasizes that at EFSA, their role is to identify which are the major problems in each production system and to give advice on what to change to reduce the severity of welfare problems. Bilindiği gibi hayvan refahı, hayvan sağlığından farklı ve daha görece daha yeni bir kavram olarak öne çıkıyor. Çiftlik hayvanları- nın sağlığını sadece endüstriyel bakış açısıyla ele almanın ötesin- de geçen ve hayvanların yaşadığı hayatın kalitesini etkileyen her şeyi konu edinen kapsamlı bir kavram. Geçtiğimiz yıllarda yemkatkıları konusuna özel olarak eğilme kararı alana ve sektörden olumlu tepkiler alan Feed Planet’in 2022’de hayvan sağlığı ve refahı konularını da ele alacağını açıklamıştık. Bu bağlamda ulusal ve uluslararası birçok kuruluş ve enstitüyle iletişime geçtik. Bunlardan biri de Avrupa Birliği ile yakından çalışan Avrupa Gıda Güvenliği Otoritesi (EFSA). Bu sayımızda kurumun hayvan refahından sorumlu müdürü Sayın Yves van der Stede ile bir röportaj yapma imkânı bulduk. Kapak konumuzun kanatlı refahı olarak belirlenmiş olması nedeniyle bu türü odak noktasına alarak oldukça bilgilendirici bir sohbet etme imkânı bulduk. Hayvan refahının Dünya Hayvan Sağlığı Örgütü'ne (OIE) göre bilimsel temelli olarak ele alınması gerektiğinde dikkati çeken Yves van der Stede, hayvan refahı ile ilgili gelişmelerin hayvan sağlığına doğrudan olumlu etki yaptığını ve bunun da üretimden taviz vermeden gerçekleştirilebileceğini ifade etti. Bir iki nesil öncesine kıyasla sağlıklı gıda konusunda daha bilinçli ve talepkâr olduğu bilinen tüketicilerin hayvan sağlığı ve refahı konusunda da hassas olduğu görülüyor. Van der Stede’ye göre, tüketiciler evlerine giren gıdanın hayvan refa- hı kriterlerine uygun bir şekilde yetiştirilmesine de artık önem verdikleri kaydederken, EFSA olarak kendi görevlerinin de üretim sistemlerindeki başlıca sorunların hangileri olduğunu belirlemek ve hayvan refahı sorunlarını en aza indirmek için nelerin değiştirilmesi gerektiği konusunda tavsiyelerde bulun- mak olduğuna vurgu yapıyor.
