FEED PLANET • JULY - TEMMUZ 2023 72 ARTICLE • MAKALE BEST-IN-CLASS PRACTICES FOR THE FEED SECTOR Countries such as the UK and the Netherlands which are at the forefront of sustainable palm oil sourcing have developed best-in-class business practices for the feed sector. Nevedi, the Dutch Association for the Animal Feed Industry, was the first group to venture into the collective purchase of RSPO Credits in the feed sector for domestic consumption and has now moved further towards a 100% coverage of the total palm oil footprint, national consumption and export. Considering that two-thirds of the country’s production is reaching consu- mers outside the Netherlands, this move represents a bold step in the right direction. To help the UK feed sector play its part in meeting the UK Government’s target of using only sustainably-sourced palm, the Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC), joined the RSPO as a member and soon after created a new scheme to assist Members’ environmental ambitions. The scheme purchases RSPO Credits for palm and its derivatives on behalf of AIC Members or assurance sche- me participants, giving the feed sector a way to support the production of sustainable palm using a Book and Claim system. While European uptake of CSPKE is currently in the single digits, the contras- tingly high uptake of other certified sustainable palm oil products is evidence that the region can stimu- late the market for more sustainable products in the feed sector. Increasing the purchasing of CSPKE, albeit via RSPO Credits, will also have a ripple effect in encouraging more palm kernel crushers to join the RSPO and become certified. Strict regulations can be the necessary push for agro- commodities to ensure they are free from deforestation. Ad- vanced certification systems such as those of the RSPO can play a crucial role in helping companies be better prepared in meeting those requirements. Animal feed producers and traders, meat and dairy pro- ducers, as well as retailers have the opportunity to catalyse change by asking their suppliers whether the feed, feed addi- tives or milk replacements are sourced sustainably, and if not, how they plan to address this. Choosing to source RSPO Cer- tified sustainable material shows that companies are taking concrete actions to benefit people and the planet. YEM SEKTÖRÜ İÇİN SINIFININ EN İYİSİ UYGULAMALAR Sürdürülebilir palm yağı tedarikinde ön sıralarda yer alan İn- giltere ve Hollanda gibi ülkeler, yem sektörü için sınıfının en iyisi iş uygulamaları geliştirmiştir. Hollanda Hayvan Yemi En- düstrisi Birliği Nevedi, yem sektöründe iç tüketim için toplu RSPO Kredisi satın alma girişiminde bulunan ilk grup oldu ve şimdi toplam palm yağı ayak izinin, ulusal tüketimin ve ihracatın %100’ünü karşılama yolunda ilerledi. Ülke üretiminin üçte ikisi- nin Hollanda dışındaki tüketicilere ulaştığı düşünüldüğünde, bu hamle doğru yönde atılmış cesur bir adımı temsil etmektedir. Tarım Endüstrileri Konfederasyonu (AIC), Birleşik Krallık yem sektörünün Birleşik Krallık Hükümeti’nin sadece sür- dürülebilir kaynaklı palm kullanımı hedefine ulaşmasında rol oynamasına yardımcı olmak için RSPO’ya üye olarak katıldı ve kısa süre sonra Üyelerin çevresel hedeflerine yardımcı olmak için yeni bir program oluşturdu. Program, AIC Üyeleri veya güvence programı katılımcıları adına palm ve türevleri için RSPO Kredileri satın alarak, yem sektörüne bir Defter ve Talep sistemi kullanarak sürdü- rülebilir palm üretimini desteklemenin bir yolunu sunuyor. Avrupa’da CSPKE alımı şu anda tek haneli rakamlarda olsa da, diğer sertifikalı sür- dürülebilir palm yağı ürün- lerinin yüksek alımı, böl- genin yem sektöründe daha sürdürülebilir ürün- ler için pazarı canlandı- rabileceğinin kanıtıdır. RSPO Kredileri aracılığıy- la da olsa CSPKE alımının artırılması, daha fazla palm çekirdeği kırıcısının RSPO’ya katılmasını ve sertifikalı hale gelmesini teşvik etmede bir dal- galanma etkisi meydana getirecektir. Sıkı düzenlemeler, tarımsal ürünlerin orman- sızlaşmadan ari olmasını sağlamak için gerekli itici güç olabilir. RSPO’nunki gibi gelişmiş sertifikasyon sistemleri, şir- ketlerin bu gereklilikleri karşılamada daha hazırlıklı olmalarına yardımcı olmada önemli bir rol oynayabilir. Hayvan yemi üreticileri ve tüccarları, et ve süt ürünleri üre- ticileri ve perakendeciler, tedarikçilerine yem, yem katkı mad- deleri veya süt ikamelerinin sürdürülebilir şekilde tedarik edilip edilmediğini ve edilmiyorsa bunu nasıl ele almayı planladıkları- nı sorarak değişimi katalize etme fırsatına sahiptir. RSPO Serti- fikalı sürdürülebilir malzeme tedarik etmeyi seçmek, şirketlerin insanlara ve gezegene fayda sağlamak için somut adımlar at- tığını göstermektedir.
