In his speech during the opening ceremony, Deputy Mi- nister of Agriculture and Forestry Nihat Pakdil said, “Seed is the first step of life. Seed is the key to existence. Seed production has become more important in terms of plant health and food safety. As global population increases, the industry and service sector expands. People living in rural areas migrate to the city. This puts pressure on pro- duction areas. The question ‘How can we produce more efficiently?’ comes to the agenda. Seed alone is a critical factor. The advances in this field since the last century have turned this field into an industry. Today, export/import cove- rage ratio in the seed sector has exceeded 100%.” NO GMO SEEDS IN TURKEY Savaş Akcan, President of the Turkish Seed Union (TÜRK- TOB) said that they have waged war against the false facts in the seed sector and underlined that the misinformation corrodes the sector. “There are contradiction in terms on topics such as domestic seed, certified seed, hybrid seed, and GMO. We try to disseminate the fact that producing and trading GMO seed is prohibited in Turkey, that we are a net seed exporter and many other misinformation,” Akcan stated. Akcan reminded that problems such as the global pan- demic, climate crisis and wars directly affect food and agri- culture. “Nevertheless, when looking at the level we have reached, we are one of the luckiest geographies amid the current crises. Tohumculuk gerek bitki sağlığı, gerek gıda güvenliği açısından daha önemli hale geldi. Dünyada nü- fus arttıkça sanayi ve hizmet sektörü genişliyor. Kırsalda yaşayan insanlar şehre göç ediyor. Bizim üretim alanlarımız üzerinde bir baskı oluşturuyor. ‘Daha verimli nasıl üretim ya- pabiliriz?’ sorusu gündeme geliyor. Tohum tek başına ciddi bir faktör. Geçen yüzyıldan itibaren bu alandaki ilerlemeler bu alanı adeta bir endüstri haline getirdi. Bugün tohumcu- luk sektörümüzde ihracatın ithalatı karşılama oranı yüzde 100’ün çok üzerine çıktı.” dedi. TÜRKİYE’DE GDO’LU TOHUM YOK Tohumculuk sektöründe doğru bilinen yanlışlara savaş açan ve sektörü yıpratıcı ve yanlış bilginin ülkenin milli değerlerine zarar verdiğinin altını çizen Türkiye Tohumcu- lar Birliği (TÜRKTOB) Başkanı Savaş Akcan, “Yerli tohum, sertifikalı tohum, hibrit tohum, GDO gibi başlıklarda yanlış bilinenler var. Türkiye’de GDO’lu tohum üretiminin ve tica- retinin yasak olduğunu, tohumda ithalat bağımlısı değil tam tersi net ihracatçı olduğumuzu ve daha birçok yanlış bilginin doğrusunu paylaşıyoruz.” Dedi. Küresel pandemi, iklim krizi, savaşlar gibi sorunların gıda- yı ve tarımı doğrudan etkilediğini hatırlatan Akcan “Bunlara rağmen geldiğimiz noktaya baktığımızda yaşanılan krizler içinde en şanslı coğrafyalardan biriyiz. Her ne kadar kamuo- yunda farklı bilgiler dolaşsa dahi yaşanılan zorlu süreçlerde Türk tarım ve tohumculuk sektörü devlet desteğiyle elinden gelen tüm gayreti göstermektedir.” ifadelerini kullandı.
