Dr. Xiaomin Li reminds that as a result of seve- ral incidences, such as the melamine scandal in 2008, stricter regulations have been put in place but there is still a call for more complete feed regulations on safety and quality assurance in China. With its huge population, China is both a giant producer and market. “It’s a respon- sibility with worldwide implications, as China is a leading importer, producer, and consumer of animal feeds and feed ingredients, affecting food quality and safety around the globe”, Dr. Li points out, taking the Chinese reality into consideration. Below is the interview with Dr. Li: Can you tell us a bit about the work that you’re do- ing at the Institute of Quality Standard and Testing Technology for Agro Products? The Institute of Quality Standard and Testing Techno- logy for Agro Products (IQSTAP) in Beijing, China, is dedi- cated to achieving improvements of feed safety in China. It’s a responsibility with worldwide implications, as China is a leading importer, producer, and consumer of animal feeds and feed ingredients, affecting food quality and sa- fety around the globe. At IQSTAP, we focus on feed resource development and utilization, feed and animal product safety, ecological environment safety, and animal product quality. Researc- hers investigate all facets of the feed industry, but mainly focus on feed biotechnology, biochemical engineering and extraction, animal nutrition and feed science, feed processing technology, feed testing and safety evaluati- on, and feed economy and information. Please explain the importance of feed analysis in China? It has generally been believed for some time that Chi- nese governmental regulations are behind the current demand in the feed industry. As a result of several inci- dences, such as the melamine scandal in 20081, stricter regulations have been put in place but there is still a call for more complete feed regulations on safety and quality assurance in China. Laboratories such as ours at IQS- TAP are continuously developing analytical capabilities with new methods and innovative technology, to help the industry achieve this. What are dioxins and why is it important to do ultra- trace toxin analysis of feeds? Çin’in Pekin kentinde bulunan Tarım Ürünleri Kalite Standardı ve Test Teknolojisi (IQSTAP) Enstitüsü ülkede yem güvenliği gelişmelerine katkıda bulunmaya odaklanı- yor. Çin’in dünya genelinde gıda kalitesini ve güvenliğini etkileyen hayvan yemleri ve yem içeriklerinde lider ithalat- çı, üretici ve tüketici olduğu düşünüldüğünde bunun bir sorumluluk olduğu görülüyor. IQSTAP’ta, yem kaynaklarının gelişimine ve kullanı- mına, yem ve hayvan ürünü güvenliğine, ekolojik çevre güvenliği ve hayvan ürünü kalitesine odaklanıyoruz. Araş- tırmacılar yem endüstrisinin her yönünü araştırsa da te- melde yem biyoteknolojisi, biyokimyasal mühendislik ve ekstrasyon, hayvan besleme ve yem bilimi, yem işleme teknolojisi, yem test ve güvenlik değerlendirmesi ve yem ekonomisi ve bilgilerine odaklanıyor. Çin’deki yen analizlerinin önemini izah eder misiniz?
