With the new funding, FAO will support more than 115 thou- sand vulnerable rural households in three most drought affected countries - Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Na- tions (FAO) welcomed a €20 million contribution from Ger- many to save lives and livelihoods of the most severely drought-affected farmers and herders in the Horn of Africa. It is a vital contribution which comes at a critical time in the response to the drought emergency. “We would like to thank the Government of Germany for the generous contribution, which will help provide efficient and effective assistance to highly-vulnerable, agriculture-reliant communities in the most impacted areas,” said FAO Director-General QU Dongyu. An extended, multi-season drought is driving acute food insecurity across the region, with 12 to 14 million people now on the brink of starvation as crops continue to wither and ani- mals weaken. The situation is further exacerbated by esca- lating resource-based conflicts as competition for water and pasturelands increases, the COVID-19 pandemic and linger- ing consequences of a large-scale locust invasion. FAO’S PLAN TO AVERT HUNGER CRISIS Under FAO’s new Horn of Africa Drought Response Plan, $130 million is urgently needed to provide time-critical as- sistance to 1.5 million highly vulnerable people in communi- ties within drought-hit regions of Ethiopia, Kenya and Soma- lia. The plan supports the production of up to 90 million liters of milk and up to 40 000 tonnes of staple food crops in the first part of 2022. Ekinler kurumaya ve hayvanlar zayıflamaya devam ederken ve 12-14 milyon insan açlığın eşiğindeyken, uzun zamandır devam eden kuraklık, bölge genelinde akut gıda güvensizliğine neden oluyor. Su ve meralar için reka- bet arttıkça, COVID-19 salgını ve büyük ölçekli bir çekirge istilasının devam eden sonuçlarıyla, kaynak için çatışmaların artmasıyla durum daha da kötüleşiyor. FAO'NUN AÇLIK KRİZİNİ ÖNLEME PLANI FAO'nun yeni Somali Yarımadası Kuraklık Müdahale Planı kapsamında, Etiyopya, Kenya ve Somali'nin kuraklıktan et- kilenen bölgelerinde yaşayan ve kritik durumdaki 1,5 milyon kişiye yardım sağlamak için acilen 130 milyon dolara ihtiyaç duyuluyor. Plan, 2022'nin ilk bölümünde 90 milyon litreye kadar süt ve 40.000 tona kadar temel gıda mahsulünün üretimine destek veriyor.
