From essential nutrients to preservatives, antioxidants, and even probiotics, additives play a vital role in ensuring both safety and appeal. Additives in pet food serve various purposes: The first one is to provide nutritional benefits, e.g. vitamins. The se- cond purpose concerns technological additives for safety and maintaining the desirable features of texture, stability and resistance to spoilage and lastly there can be sensory additives providing the colour and flavour. The term ‘additive’ can be applied to a range of ingredi- ents that manufacturers add to the basic ingredients that are at the heart of pet food. Bu küçük oranlı bileşenler başlıca vitamin ve mi- neraller gibi temel besinleri içerir, mins and minerals, but also flavours, colours and agents to prevent harmful spoilage of the pet food due to fats going rancid or through bacterial contamination. Preservatives may be added, largely depending upon the type of pet food product and processing, to ensure that food products remain nutritious and safe for consumption throughout the- ir shelf life. The food must be protected from bacterial or mould contamination and spoilage, further it must be pro- tected from degradation and the loss of nutrients during storage. The method of preservation used depends on the type of food because the way of processing also contribu- tes to the food integrity and shelf life: Dry pet food: The manufacturing process kills microbes and the low moisture content helps to inhibit the growth of most organisms. Moist pet food: The heat applied in cooking of canned or pouch pet food kill microbes and the packaging exclu- des air, protecting the food. Mamaların raf ömrü boyunca besleyici ve tüketilebilir kal- masını sağlamak amacıyla, ürünün türüne ve işlenme yön- temine bağlı olarak koruyucu maddeler eklenebilir. Mama; bakteri veya küf kontaminasyonu ve bozulmadan korun- malı, ayrıca depolama süresince besin değerlerinin kaybı ve bozulmadan da korunmalıdır. Kullanılan koruma yöntemi mama türüne göre değişir, çünkü işleme şekli de mamanın bütünlüğünü ve raf ömrünü etkiler: Kuru evcil hayvan mamaları: Üretim süreci mikroorga- nizmaları öldürür ve düşük nem içeriği, çoğu organizmanın büyümesini engeller. Yaş evcil hayvan mamaları: Konserve veya poşet ma- maların pişirilmesinde uygulanan ısı mikropları öldürür ve ambalaj hava girişini engelleyerek mamayı korur. Soğutulmuş evcil hayvan mamaları: İşlenmiş soğutul- muş mamalar kontrollü ısıl işlemden geçirilir ve depolama sürecinde soğutma ile birlikte bozulmanın önlenmesine yar- dımcı olur.
