FEED PLANET • JULY - TEMMUZ 2026 FEED PLANET • JULY - TEMMUZ 2026 42 43 COVER STORY • KAPAK DOSYASI In the delicate balance between food security and the cli- mate crisis, the livestock sector and its lifeblood, the feed industry, stand at a critical turning point. In the animal produc- tion chain, which is held responsible for a significant share of global greenhouse gas emissions, reducing the carbon footprint is no longer a commercial preference but an ecolo- gical and regulatory imperative. True sustainability requires addressing animal producti- on not just within farm boundaries, but as a holistic supply chain extending “From Farm to Fork.” This article examines the technological, logistical, and nutrition-focused reduction approaches that can be implemented throughout the entire process, from agricultural raw material production to trans- port, and from feed mills to livestock enterprises. In the delicate balance between food security and the cli- mate crisis, the livestock sector and its lifeblood, the feed industry, stand at a critical turning point. By addressing the entire supply chain extending “From Farm to Fork” with a holistic approach, from regenerative agricultural practices in the field to green steps in logistics, and from energy efficiency in feed mills to next-generation smart additive technologies that increase digestibility in the ration, reduc- ing the carbon footprint in animal production is no longer a commercial preference but an ecological imperative. TARIMSAL FAALİYETLER: SÜRDÜRÜLEBİLİR HAM MADDE ÜRETİMİ Hayvansal üretimin karbon ayak izinin büyük bir kısmı, as- lında çiftliğe henüz yem gelmeden, tarladaki bitkisel üretim aşamasında (Kapsam 3 emisyonları) oluşur. 1. AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES: SUSTAINABLE RAW MATERIAL PRODUCTION A large part of the carbon footprint of animal production is generated during the crop production phase in the field (Scope 3 emissions) before the feed even arrives at the farm. The main approaches to reduce carbon emissions during the cultivation of feed raw materials are as follows: Regenerative Agriculture and Precision Fertilization: The most potent greenhouse gas in agriculture is nitrous oxi- de (N2O), which is released through the use of chemical nit- rogen fertilizers. Prescription-based application based on soil analysis, fertigation (fertilization through drip irrigation), and the use of controlled-release fertilizers significantly re- duce these emissions. Additionally, no-till farming increases the carbon capture and storage capacity of the soil. Deforestation-Free Supply Chain: The destruction of forest areas for the production of high-protein raw materials, particularly soybeans, disrupts the global carbon balance. Turning to sustainability-certified (e.g., RTRS) raw materials or incorporating alternatives suited to the local climate, such as legumes, canola, and sunflower meal into the ration instead of soy, is a critical step. Alternative Protein Sources: Among the agricultural ac- tivities of the future, insect proteins (e.g., black soldier fly lar- vae) and microalgae, which can be produced using vertical farming methods with minimal resource consumption, ligh- ten the carbon load by reducing the need for traditional ag- ricultural land.
